Hosting an Eco-Friendly Summer BBQ: Practical Tips for a Greener Gathering

July 2, 2024 //  by Tina Beittel

As summer approaches and the holiday season brings us together, hosting an eco-friendly BBQ can be both enjoyable and responsible. By making a few simple adjustments, you can celebrate sustainably without compromising on fun. Here are some practical tips and quick examples to help you plan a green gathering that’s easy to set up and break down.

Eco-Friendly Grill Options:

  1. Gas Grill: Using a gas grill is a more environmentally friendly option compared to charcoal, as it reduces emissions. Simply hook up a propane tank, and you’re ready to go.
  2. Electric Grill: If you have access to electricity outdoors, an electric grill offers consistent heat and cleaner cooking.
  3. Reusable Charcoal: Opt for sustainable charcoal made from coconut shells or other renewable resources for a greener grilling experience.

Sustainable Decorations:

  1. Reusable Tablecloth: Replace plastic tablecloths with an old bedsheet or a fabric tablecloth. It adds rustic charm and can be washed and reused.
  2. Paper Streamers: Create eco-friendly decorations by cutting strips of colored paper from old magazines or newspapers and stringing them together.
  3. Natural Centerpieces: Fill a mason jar with wildflowers or fresh herbs from your garden. This adds a natural touch and the herbs can be used in your cooking afterward.
  4. Find more eco-friendly party decoration ideas here:https://greenthatlife.com/eco-friendly-party-decorations/

Eco-Friendly Dinnerware:

  1. Biodegradable Plates and Cutlery: Choose plates and utensils made from compostable materials like bamboo or cornstarch. They are sturdy and can be composted after use.
  2. Reusable Plates and Cutlery: If possible, use your everyday dishes and cutlery. If you don’t have enough, consider borrowing from friends or family. Find a bin to hold the used items to allow a quick hose rinse to help with cleanup.
  3. Mason Jars: Use mason jars as drinking glasses. They are durable, reusable, and add a charming touch to your BBQ setup.

Waste Reduction:

  1. Compost Bins: If you have a small compost bin or bucket, collect food scraps and compostable plates.
  2. Recycling Stations: Set up clearly marked bins for recycling bottles, cans, and paper products. Use an old Amazon boxes lined with a bag for trash collection.
  3. Minimize Packaging: Encourage guests to bring their food in reusable containers and avoid single-use plastic packaging.

Eco-Friendly Food & Beverage Choices:

  1. Plant-Based Options: Offer veggie burgers, grilled vegetables, and salads as delicious alternatives to meat. A simple veggie skewer with cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and zucchini only requires three ingredients.
  2. Local Produce: Visit a farmers’ market to get fresh, local fruits and vegetables. They often have lower carbon footprints compared to store-bought produce.
  3. Homemade Sauces: Make a simple three-ingredient salsa with diced tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. It’s fresh, delicious, and reduces packaging waste.
  4. Find more healthy recipes here: https://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/18260/cooking-methods-styles/bbq-grilling/
  5. Bulk and Homemade: Serve drinks in bulk, like lemonade or iced tea, in large dispensers instead of individual bottles or cans. For alcoholic beverages, consider kegs or growlers instead of single-use bottles and cans.
  6. Reusable Cups: Encourage guests to bring their own reusable cups or provide each guest with a reusable or disposable cup they can use throughout the event (Sharpie their name on it).

Energy Efficiency:

  1. Solar Lights: Decorate with solar-powered string lights for an eco-friendly lighting solution that doesn’t require electricity.
  2. Battery-Powered Fans: Use battery-operated fans to keep cool without needing to run an extension cord.

Cleanup:

  1. Reusable Cleaning Cloths: Use cloth napkins and dish towels instead of paper towels for cleanup. They can be washed and reused.
  2. Natural Cleaners: Make a simple cleaning solution with vinegar, water, and a few drops of essential oil for a chemical-free way to clean up after the party. Or use biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products for post-BBQ clean-up.

By implementing these simple, practical tips, you can enjoy a festive, eco-friendly summer BBQ that’s easy to set up and break down while minimizing your environmental impact.
