Do You See What We See? Tank Inspections Stop Failures Before They Start

April 9, 2026 //  by Tina Beittel

API 653 Formal External Inspections

Formal external inspections are critical for assessing the condition of large above-ground storage tanks (ASTs) and associated equipment. Conducted by certified inspectors under the API 653 standard, these inspections focus on identifying external corrosion, structural damage, leaks, and hazards to ensure tank safety and compliance.

Key points about API 653 external inspections:

  • Apply to field-erected steel or metal alloy tanks at least 30 feet in diameter or 50 feet in height, typically over 75,000 gallons capacity.
  • Required at least every five years, with frequency adjusted based on tank age, use, and prior inspection results.
  • Support compliance with EPA Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) regulations.
  • Inspection methods include:
    • Visual examination of tank roof, shell, appurtenances, and foundation.
    • Non-destructive testing (NDT), such as ultrasonic thickness testing and magnetic particle inspection.
    • Review of tank maintenance and inspection records.
  • Inspectors deliver a detailed report highlighting issues found and recommendations for repairs or maintenance.
  • Regular API 653 inspections are linked to up to 50% fewer tank failure incidents by catching corrosion and metal loss early—often before it exceeds 10% thickness.

API 653 Internal Inspections

Internal inspections under API 653 uncover corrosion, leaks, and structural weaknesses inside tanks that may not be visible externally. These inspections help maintain tank integrity and prevent failures.

Important aspects of API 653 internal inspections:

  • Generally start 10 years after tank construction and are repeated every 20 years or as corrosion rates dictate.
  • Require tank shutdown, draining, and thorough cleaning.
  • Conducted by certified inspectors who perform:
    • Visual inspection of interior surfaces, welds, and coatings.
    • Non-destructive testing techniques, including ultrasonic thickness gauging, magnetic flux leakage, and radiographic inspections.
  • Results summarized in comprehensive reports with actionable repair recommendations.
  • Average corrosion rates of 2–5 mils per year highlight why internal checks prevent hidden defects from escalating.

Monthly Routine Inspections under API 653

To complement formal inspections, tank owners or operators perform monthly routine inspections to quickly identify potential problems.

Key elements of monthly inspections:

  • Perform visual checks for corrosion, leaks, coating degradation, and physical damage.
  • Measure tank shell verticality, foundation settlement, and out-of-roundness.
  • Inspect cathodic protection systems for functionality.
  • Test safety devices such as pressure relief valves and emergency vents.
  • Maintain thorough documentation to track trends and enable proactive maintenance.
  • These routine checks reduce emergency repairs and environmental incidents through early trend detection.

STI SP001 Inspection Standard

The Steel Tank Institute’s STI SP001 standard governs inspections of shop-fabricated steel tanks smaller than 30 feet diameter and 50 feet height, commonly up to 75,000 gallons capacity.

Main points regarding STI SP001 inspections:

  • Covers horizontal or vertical tanks, single- or double-walled.
  • Certified inspectors assess both external conditions (including secondary containment, foundations, and spill prevention systems) and internal components, particularly the tank bottom.
  • Inspection intervals vary based on tank category, spill control measures, and detection systems.
  • External and internal inspections together provide a thorough evaluation of tank safety and compliance.

API 510 Pressure Vessel Inspections

API 510 inspections ensure the safety of pressure vessels used in industrial settings, including boilers, heat exchangers, and reactors, especially those with internal pressures over 15 psig.

Critical features of API 510 inspections:

  • Performed by certified inspectors reviewing documentation and performing external and internal examinations.
  • Use non-destructive testing to detect corrosion, cracks, or pressure weaknesses.
  • Inspections guide necessary repairs or replacements to uphold safety standards.
  • Detailed documentation supports ongoing asset management and regulatory compliance.

Regular adherence to these standards – backed by the up to 50% reduction in failures from API 653 programs – demonstrates how professional inspections turn compliance into proactive risk control.
